University Environmental Club &
Children Love Bird Club
March 2004

In March of 2004, 15 students from the Environmental Club at Rankampang University in Bangkok came to
Whispering Seed to hold a 2 week camp for children in the local area. During the time, the university students
also had the opportunity to experience a sustainable way of living on the farm.
With no electricity, no running water, no flush toilets, taking a bath in the river, they were able to experience
an alternative to life in Bangkok.

During the 2 weeks, we worked with children coming from three local villages. The first project was with
Dek Rak Nok, Children Love Bird Club from Issan in western Thailand. They came and worked with the children
doing two activities, the river detective and bird watching.

The River Detective

We went to the local river to explore the health of our river. By collecting and identifying plants and
animals of all shapes and sizes, we were able to identify how clean our river was. It was amazing to see all the life in the river which was so easy to overlook in our daily life along the river.

Bird Watching

Following the river detective activity, we went out in the early morning mist to see what kinds of birds
live in the village with us. Once again, we were amazing at the numbers of wildlife surrounding us,
beautiful birds of so many colors which we rarely took notice of.

Making a Mud Brick oven and Pizza!!

Then we went to the neighbors farm and built a mud brick oven for them. First we had to hand make
(and feet make) the bricks from mud, water and rice husk. Once the bricks were finished, we formed the oven
and then did a final plaster over it.
Once the oven was dry, we learned how to make pizza and banana bread and baked it in the oven!!!

relaxing in the river
In March of 2005, the environmental club will join us
again at our new farm for another camp to learn
about natural house building & to work with the local children.
